How do I set up my Fitbit scale?

Set up your Fitbit scale with the Fitbit app for iPhones and iPads or Android phones. For more information, see How do I set up my Fitbit device?

How do I know which Fitbit scale I have?

If you're unsure which scale you own, turn the scale over and remove the battery cover to see how many batteries it contains:

  • Aria uses 4 AA batteries
  • Aria 2 uses 3 AA batteries and has “Aria 2” written on the back of the scale
  • Aria Air uses 3 AAA batteries.
How should I store and clean my Fitbit scale?
Your Fitbit scale should always be stored flat. When moved or stored vertically, you may need to perform 2 consecutive weigh-ins to recalibrate the scale. For instructions on how to clean your scale, see How do I clean my Fitbit device?
Is my Fitbit scale waterproof?
Fitbit scales are dust and water-resistant. They aren't waterproof. If your scale gets slightly wet, wipe it with a dry towel. If it gets completely wet, take out the batteries immediately and let it dry.

  2. Choose to show body fat percentage and BMI on your scale. The next time you weigh in and the scale syncs, the settings are saved.

What’s the difference between regular and lean mode?

Aria and Aria 2 have two modes to calculate body fat percentage. The default is “regular” mode, which applies to most people. “Lean” mode is intended for professional or very high-level athletes with exceptionally low body fat relative to their muscle mass.

Note that Aria Air doesn't calculate body fat percentage.

If your scale’s current mode appears to give you an incorrect body fat percentage reading, try switching modes:

  3. Turn Lean Mode on or off. The next time you weigh in and the scale syncs, the mode switches and your body fat percentage is calculated with the mode you selected.

How do I add or remove someone from my Fitbit scale?
All scale users need their own Fitbit account to sync their weight and see additional data. Up to 8 users can link their Fitbit accounts to Fitbit Aria or Fitbit Aria 2.
How do I add someone to my Fitbit scale?
After you invite your friend to use the scale, they receive an email invitation with instructions to set up the scale. Until they accept the email invitation, only their weight is shown. For Aria and Aria 2, their weigh-ins are also labeled as "Guest" on the scale.

  2. On iPhones and iPads, tap People Using This ScaleInvite More People. On Android phones, tap Users tap the + icon.
  3. Choose from the list of your Fitbit friends or enter an email address, then tap the add user button A silhouette of a person and a plus sign to its left.

  3. Click the pink Invite People button, then enter the email address of the person you want to add to the scale. If that person has a Fitbit account, use the email address that they use with Fitbit.
How do I remove someone from my Fitbit scale?
Removing someone from your scale doesn't delete their Fitbit account. People who don't have a Fitbit account linked to your scale can continue to use it, but only their weight is shown. For Aria and Aria 2, their weigh-ins are also labeled as "Guest" on the scale.

Can I use my Fitbit scale if I’m pregnant or have an implanted medical device?

Aria and Aria 2 measure body mass using bioimpedance analysis, which sends a small electric signal through the body. Don’t use Aria or Aria 2 if you have an implanted medical device such as a pacemaker, or if you’re pregnant. Consult your doctor if you have any questions about using these devices.

Aria Air doesn’t use bioimpedance analysis and there are no restrictions on use if you are pregnant or have an implanted medical device.

Why don't I see my weigh-ins in the Fitbit app?

Your scale might not be linked to your account in the Fitbit app, or it might be assigning your weigh-ins to a guest. Follow the instructions in Why is my Fitbit scale recognizing me as a guest? to check whether your scale is correctly linked to your Fitbit account and your personal information is accurate.

For Aria 2: Remove the batteries from your scale and wait 30 seconds. Re-insert the batteries in the scale and weigh yourself again. If your weight is still assigned to a guest, factory reset the scale and go through the setup process again. For instructions, see How do I erase my Fitbit device?
Why is my Fitbit scale recognizing me as a guest?

If Aria or Aria 2 reads GUEST when you weigh yourself, verify that your scale is linked to your Fitbit account and that your Fitbit profile information is correct.

Aria 2 may assign your weigh-in to a guest when your measurements are similar to another user and the scale is unsure how to assign the weigh-in. When this happens, the scale shows an icon like the one below:

If the user icon shown is yours, tap the right side of the scale with your foot. If the user icon is not yours, tap the left side of the scale. If you do nothing, the weigh-in is assigned to a guest.

Note that for Fitbit Aria Air, if you saved a guest's weigh-in to your Fitbit account, you can delete the weight log. For more information, see How do I add, edit, or delete Fitbit data and activities?

How do I check if my scale is linked to my Fitbit account?

Tap the Today tab   Devices . Your scale should be listed under your name.

If you don't see your scale listed, your scale isn't linked to your Fitbit account. Follow the instructions in How do I set up my Fitbit device? to link your scale.

For Aria Air, make sure you have the Fitbit app open on your nearby phone when you complete a weigh-in.

How do I check my personal information?
If you confirmed that your scale is set up and syncing correctly, there may be an issue with the weight and height information stored in your Fitbit profile.

  1. Tap the Today tab  Devices  your name.
  2. Tap Personal Stats and verify that your height and weight are correct.
  3. Weigh yourself 3 times to verify that your scale recognizes you.

For Aria 2: If your scale is linked to your account and your personal information is correct, but you still don't see your weigh-ins in the Fitbit app, remove the batteries from your scale and wait 30 seconds. How do I reassign a weight on my Fitbit scale?

  1. Tap the Today tab Devices   your scale tile.
  2. Tap Recent Weigh-Ins.
  3. Tap the weigh-in you want to reassign.
  4. Reassign the weigh-in to the correct person.

How do I reconnect my Fitbit scale to my wireless network?

Reconnect Aria or Aria 2 to your wireless network if you make changes to your network name, network provider, network password, or router.

Note that these instructions don't apply to Fitbit Aria Air.

Aria
  1. In a web browser, visit fitbit.com/scale/setup/start and click Get Started.
  2. Enter a name for your scale and your initials.
  3. When prompted, put your scale into setup mode by removing a battery from your scale, waiting 10 seconds, and then reinserting the battery.
  4. Your scale will show "Wi-Fi is (your network name)" followed by "Tap to change." With the palms of your hands, press down firmly and briefly (less than a second) on the lower two corners of the scale. You should see the message "Setup active" on your scale's screen. Note: If the screen is blank, you see the message "Step on," or if the message “Tap to change” scrolls across the scale’s screen, take out and reinsert a battery, then repeat the setup process.
  5. After you see the message “Setup Active,” follow the instructions in your web browser to complete the setup process.
Aria 2
  1. With your scale and Wi-Fi router nearby, open the Fitbit app on your phone.
  2. On the Today tab , tap Devices  Aria 2.
  3. Tap Wi-Fi Network or Pair Scale to Different Network.
  4. Tap Next and follow the on-screen instructions to reconnect your scale to your network.

How do I check the battery level of my Fitbit scale?

Check the battery level icon on the display.
Aria and Aria 2
  1. In the Fitbit app, tap the Today tab  Devices  (on fitbit.com, click settings ).
  2. Check the battery icon next to the name of your scale. The battery level is accurate as of the last sync.

If your scale's battery level is low, replace the batteries. If the battery level isn't low, remove the batteries for at least 10 seconds and reinsert them.

If your scale doesn't turn on after replacing the batteries, contact Customer Support.

Error Message Issue Troubleshooting Steps
WIFI ERR or NO SYNC (during setup) The scale couldn't communicate with your Wi-Fi network.

This error occurs most commonly when the network password is entered incorrectly or the router was not properly set up. It could also be due to a network firewall, MAC filtering, or the use of network extenders or repeaters. Verify that your password is correct and that your router is set to allow for the required 802.11b connection. If you're unsure of your Wi-Fi password, see How do I find my Wi-Fi network password and security setting? If you need assistance verifying your router's configuration, consult your router's manual or contact your internet provider.

Before you try to set up your scale again, we recommend the following:

  • Keep the scale within 10 feet of your router.
  • Clear the cache and cookies in your browser.
  • We don't recommend using extenders. If you're using an extender, make sure it's on a lower channel than your router.
NO SYNC or Wi-Fi symbol with an “X” (after weigh-in) The scale can't communicate with your Wi-Fi network.

This error occurs most commonly when the network settings are changed, such as when you set up a new router or change your network name or password. Verify that your router is powered on and that Aria is nearby. For troubleshooting steps, see Why won't my Fitbit device sync?

SENSING, THINKING, ERR The scale can't measure your weight. Remove the batteries for 10 seconds and reinsert them. Be sure the scale is placed on an even surface and weigh yourself again. If this error message persists, contact Customer Support.
GUEST The scale can't identify the user who weighed in. If your Fitbit account is linked to the scale, see Why is my Fitbit scale recognizing me as a guest?
Aria 2

Error Message Issue Troubleshooting Steps
WRONG PASSWORD The Wi-Fi password is incorrect. This error occurs most commonly if you changed your Wi-Fi password or entered it incorrectly during setup. Remember that your password is case-sensitive. If you recently changed your network settings, see How do I reconnect my Fitbit scale to my wireless network? If you're unsure of your Wi-Fi password, see How do I find my Wi-Fi network password and security setting?
CAN'T CONNECT The scale can connect to the router but has no internet access. Check your Wi-Fi connection with another device, such as a phone or computer. If that device can't connect to the internet while connected to your Wi-Fi network, restart your router. If you still don't have internet access, check that the router's cables are plugged in.
NO WIFI The scale can't access the router. Check that your router is on. If so, move your scale closer to the router and try setting up the Wi-Fi network connection again. For instructions, see How do I reconnect my Fitbit scale to my wireless network? If manually adding your network, be sure to select the correct security type. To find your network security type, see How do I find my Wi-Fi network password and security setting?
WEAK SIGNAL The scale recognizes the router but can't connect to it. Move your scale closer to your router. Make sure you're not using a public Wi-Fi network, including any network that requires you to accept terms and conditions or log in before use.
CONNECTION ERROR The scale can't connect to your Wi-Fi network but the cause is unknown. Move your scale closer to your router and make sure you're not using a public Wi-Fi network, including any network that requires you to accept terms and conditions or log in before use. If you receive this error more than four times in a row, wait a day before attempting another weigh-in. If this error message persists, contact Customer Support.
! The scale experienced a potential hardware failure. Remove the batteries for 10 seconds and reinsert them. If this error message persists, contact Customer Support.
1 You remained on the scale for too long after completing a weigh-in. Step off your scale after completing a weigh-in or when the scale shows the footprint icon moving backward, indicating it's time to step off the scale. If your scale continues to show this error when you weigh yourself, even after stepping off at the appropriate time, contact Customer Support.
2 Too much weight was placed on a section of the scale. Weigh yourself again. If this error message persists, contact Customer Support.
3 The scale can't complete the weigh-in. Weigh yourself again. If this error message persists, contact Customer Support.
5 The scale can't complete the weigh-in. Weigh yourself again. If this error message persists, contact Customer Support.
6 Your weight wasn't centered on the scale. Make sure your scale is on a flat, even surface. When you see an arrow on your scale, it means your weight was unbalanced and you need to move in the direction of the arrow. Weigh yourself again.
400+ / 180+ / 28+ The scale's maximum weight limit was exceeded. The maximum weight Aria 2 can detect is 400 pounds (180 kilograms or 28 stone).
GUEST The scale can't identify the user who weighed in. If your Fitbit account is linked to the scale, see Why is my Fitbit scale recognizing me as a guest?
Blank screen after removing the plastic tab from the battery compartment The batteries might not be inserted correctly. Tap the scale with your foot to see if the screen turns on. If the screen remains blank, open the battery door on the back of the scale and remove the batteries. Reinsert the batteries and close the battery door, then check the scale's screen. Step on the scale to weigh yourself.
