Why should I maintain a consistent sleep schedule?
Waking up and going to bed at a consistent time can help you sleep better and get more sleep (source
). Insufficient sleep has significant consequences for long-term health. Studies show that consistently failing to get enough sleep contributes to increased rates of chronic diseases and conditions (source
). Setting a sleep schedule can help you achieve a healthy sleep cycle.
How does Fitbit estimate how much sleep I need?
Adults are recommended to get seven to nine hours of sleep per night (source
); however, your sleep goal should be attainable and meet your individual needs.
If you have five or more sleep logs, we average them to estimate your sleep goal. You can manually adjust the goal if it doesn’t provide enough sleep or if you want to set a different goal.
If you haven’t tracked your sleep before, you can estimate how much sleep you get on a typical night. If the estimate is enough sleep, we’ll set your goal based on that estimate. You can manually adjust the goal if the estimate doesn’t provide enough sleep or if you want to set a different goal.
Do I have to set a bedtime and wake-up time target?
You can set either a bedtime or a wake-up time target or both targets. Setting both targets can help you achieve a more consistent sleep cycle.
How are my bedtime and wake-up time targets calculated?
If you have five or more sleep logs, we’ll estimate your wake-up time target based on the time you typically wake up each day. Your bedtime target will default to the time you should go to sleep in order to meet your sleep goal; however, you can manually change one or both of these times.
If you have fewer than five sleep logs, you can manually set both the bedtime and wake-up time targets.
How do I meet my bedtime and wake-up time targets?
To meet your target, simply go to sleep or wake up within 30 minutes of your target. If you meet your target, a star will appear in the sleep schedule graph. If you set both bedtime and wake-up time targets but only meet one, you won’t see a star.

- From the Fitbit app dashboard, tap the sleep tile. This is the tile that says "How did you sleep?" or, if you tracked sleep the night before, shows how many hours and minutes you slept.
- Tap the gear icon in the top right.
- Set or edit your targets. To remove a target, tap the three dots in the top right.
- Tap Done.
- From the Fitbit app dashboard, tap or click the sleep tile. This is the tile that says "How did you sleep?" or, if you tracked sleep the night before, shows how many hours and minutes you slept.
- Tap or click the moon icon on the bottom.
- Set or edit your targets. To remove a target, tap the three dots in the bottom right.
- Tap Save.
Do I need to set a bedtime target to receive a bedtime reminder?
