Challenges are a fun way to help you stay motivated. You can compete with friends and family or complete personal, non-competitive journeys.

What are the types of challenges?

You can choose from five races:

  • Daily Showdown—Who can get the most steps today?
  • Weekend Warrior—Who can get the most steps over the weekend?
  • Workweek Hustle—Who can get the most steps Monday through Friday?
  • Goal Day—How many participants can reach their daily step goal?
  • Adventures—Challenge yourself through non-competitive, solo journeys. For more information, see What should I know about adventures? 

How do I start a challenge?

To start a challenge you'll need the Fitbit app for iOS, Android, or Windows 10. After you open the app, tap the Challenges tab to get started. To invite others to the challenge, tap or click Add Players and choose among your Fitbit friends and contacts. You can see your mobile contacts and any Facebook friends who are Fitbit users but not yet your Fitbit friends. Any person from these lists that you invite to the challenge will also be added as a Fitbit friend. If you'd prefer to compete against yourself, skip the step for adding friends or start an adventure instead for a non-competitive, solo journey.

Who can participate?

Up to 10 people can participate in each challenge. If you initiate a challenge you can invite your Fitbit friends, and those friends can in turn invite their friends.

Which stats can participants see?

Challenge participants can see each other's profile photo, posted messages, total steps in the challenge, goal progress, and achievements.

Can I join a challenge that already started?

Invitees have twenty-four hours to accept an invitation. If people join after the challenge starts, their step data for the entire length of the challenge will count towards the challenge.

Can I invite more friends after a challenge has started?

After a challenge is underway you can still invite other Fitbit friends. To do so, open the challenge and find the options. You'll be able to select the friends you want to include and send them invitations.

Do I need a Fitbit tracker to participate in a challenge?

People who don't have a Fitbit tracker can still participate in a challenge if they get the Fitbit app and choose MobileTrack during setup. MobileTrack uses your mobile device to track basic stats like steps and estimated calories burned.

Can I share my challenge results with friends?

After a challenge is over and all participants have synced their data, you'll see the challenge results. You can share your challenge results with friends and family by text, email, social media, and other apps that allow photo sharing.

How do I earn trophies?

You can earn trophies by coming in first place in a challenge or completing your goal. You can also earn trophies for achieving a personal best in a challenge or for achieving your step goal for each day of the challenge. 

Are there any steps that won't count towards a challenge?

At this time, only steps from your tracker or MobileTrack count towards a challenge. That means manually logged activities and activities tracked through any third-party apps aren't included in your challenge total.

Do GPS activities count towards challenges?

If you track a GPS activity using your mobile device and the Fitbit app (called a MobileRun) during a challenge, be sure to bring your tracker along; as long as you have your tracker with you, those steps will count towards your challenge totals.

If your tracker offers GPS, steps from GPS activities and non-GPS activities are both counted towards a challenge because you're wearing your tracker.

How do I stop getting notified about challenges?

Fitbit keeps you updated on the challenge by sending push notifications or email. To choose one, both, or neither:

  1. Log in to your fitbit.com dashboard and click the gear icon in the top right.
  2. Click Settings > Notifications.
  3. Find Challenges and uncheck the notification(s) you no longer want.
  4. Don't forget to click Save.

How do I quit a challenge?

Currently, you can only quit an active challenge, meaning that finished challenges will remain visible for three days. After three days the finished challenges will disappear.

To quit an active challenge, open it and find Options, then choose the Quit option.

What happens if the challenge participants are in different time zones?

The challenge begins and ends in the challenge owner's time zone, so if you're in a different time zone than the challenge owner, you may notice that your challenge leaderboard stats do not always match your dashboard stats.
