Create a Fitbit family account to set up Fitbit Ace, control who your kids connect with in the Fitbit app, and see how active they are each day.

You and your child can see their daily stats including step count, active minutes, and sleep pattern under kid view in the Fitbit app.

Which Fitbit devices are compatible with a Fitbit child account?

Only Fitbit Ace, designed for children 8 years and older, can be connected to a Fitbit child account. For more information, see About Fitbit Ace.

Children without a Fitbit device may use MobileTrack in the Fitbit app to track their steps. Note that you must create a child account in the app before setting up MobileTrack.

What is a guardian in the Fitbit family account?

Guardians can create and delete child accounts, see daily stats for children in the family account (under kid view), and invite other family members to join the account. Each family account may have multiple guardians.

Note that guardians must be at least 18 years old and have a Fitbit account.

What is a main guardian in a Fitbit family account?

The main guardian is the creator of the family account and can add or delete other guardians. If the main guardian deletes their Fitbit account or family account, all child accounts are also deleted. 

How do I add a guardian to my Fitbit family account?

Guardians must be at least 18 years old and share their birthday information in the Fitbit app. For more information about privacy settings, see How do I manage my Fitbit profile?

To add a guardian, first add them as a friend on Fitbit. For instructions, see How do I connect with friends on Fitbit? 

After they confirm the friend request:

  1. From the Fitbit app dashboard, tap the Account icon (User-added image).
  2. Tap My Family. Make sure you’re in parent view.
  3. Find the Add Guardians option and then tap the name of the person you want to invite. They’ll receive an email and notification in the Fitbit app inviting them to join the family account.

How do I add a family member to my Fitbit family account?

To add another person to your family account, first add them as a friend on Fitbit. For instructions, see How do I connect with friends on Fitbit?

After they confirm the friend request:

  1. From the Fitbit app dashboard, tap the Account icon (User-added image).
  2. Tap My Family. Make sure you’re in parent view.
  3. Find the Invite Members option and then tap the name of the person you want to invite. They’ll receive an email and notification in the Fitbit app inviting them to join the family account.

How do I join a Fitbit family account?

You must be invited to join a Fitbit family account by a guardian of the account. Click the link in the email you receive or respond to the request in the Fitbit app. Note that you must have a Fitbit account and verify your email address to join a family account. 

To accept the request in the Fitbit app:

  1. From the Fitbit app dashboard, tap the Notifications tab.
  2. Tap Messages.
  3. Tap the request to open it.
  4. Tap Join Family.

How do I make a family member into a guardian in my Fitbit family account?

The main guardian of the Fitbit family account can make other members into guardians:

  1. From the Fitbit app dashboard, tap the Account icon (User-added image).
  2. Tap My Family.
  3. Make the member into a guardian:
    • iPhones and iPads: Swipe left on the member’s name > Guardian.
    • Android phones: Press and hold on the member's name > Make guardian.
    • Windows 10 devices: Tap the pencil icon (User-added image) > tap the guardian icon (User-added image) next to the member's name > Make guardian.
  4. Confirm you want to make the member into a guardian.

How many family members can I add to my Fitbit family account?

A total of 11 people (including guardians, members, and children) can join the same Fitbit family account.

How does my child add friends in the Fitbit app?

Members of your family account are added automatically to your child’s list of Fitbit friends. With your approval, your child can add friends outside of your family account. 

To send friend requests for a child:

  1. Under kid view, have your child tap Friends
  2. Tap Add Friends.
  3. Have your child enter their friend’s email address or Fitbit user name, and then submit the request for approval. You’ll receive an email and notification under parent view.
  4. To approve the request, click the link in the email, or switch to parent view and tap Notifications. Then tap the notification and approve it. 

After you approve the request, a notification is sent to the friend. Note that if your child adds another child as a friend, their main guardian must also approve the request.

How does my child interact with others in the Fitbit app?

Through kid view, your child can message, cheer, or taunt their Fitbit friends. If your child is competing in a challenge, they can cheer or send messages to any challenge participant.

To interact with others:
  1. Under kid view, have your child tap Friends
  2. Tap the person your child wants to message, cheer, or taunt.
  3. To send a message, have your child tap Message; otherwise, tap Cheer or Taunt.
  4. Have your child write the message and then send it.

How do I remove someone from my Fitbit family account?

Guardians can remove members and children from the family account. The main guardian can also remove other guardians. Note that removing a child from the family account also deletes the child’s Fitbit account and all related data.

To remove someone:

  1. From the Fitbit app dashboard, tap the Account icon (User-added image).
  2. Tap My Family.
  3. Remove the person from the family account:
    • iPhones and iPads: Swipe left on the person's name > Remove.
    • Android phones: Press and hold on the person's name > Remove.
    • Windows 10 devices: Tap the pencil icon (User-added image) > tap the X next to the person's name.
  4. Confirm you want to remove them. 

How do I delete my child’s Fitbit account?

Guardians can delete their child’s Fitbit account by removing them from the family account.

To delete your child’s Fitbit account:

  1. From the Fitbit app dashboard, tap the Account icon (User-added image).
  2. Tap My Family.
  3. Remove your child from the family account:
    • iPhones and iPads: Swipe left on your child's name > Remove.
    • Android phones: Press and hold on your child's name > Remove.
    • Windows 10 devices: Tap the pencil icon (User-added image) > tap the X next to your child's name.
  4. Confirm you want to delete the account.
  5. When prompted, enter your password. 
  6. Click the link in the email you receive to request to have the account deleted. Note that the email is sent to the guardian who deleted the account.  

If you change your mind, you have 7 days to recover the account. To do so, switch to kid view in the Fitbit app and tap Recover.

Can I create or join multiple Fitbit family accounts?

At this time you can be part of only 1 Fitbit family account.

How do I leave a Fitbit family account?

Guardians and family members can leave a Fitbit family account. Main guardians must delete the family account in order to leave the account. 

To leave a family account:

  1. From the Fitbit app dashboard, tap the Account icon (User-added image).
  2. Tap My Family.
  3. Leave the family account:
    1. iPhones and iPads: Swipe left on your name > Leave Family
    2. Android phones: Tap the 3 dots > Leave Family
    3. Windows 10 devices: Tap the 3 dots > Leave Family
  4. Confirm you want to leave the family account.

How do I delete my Fitbit family account?

Main guardians must remove all members from the Fitbit family account before deleting the account. Note that removing a child from the family account also deletes the child’s Fitbit account and all related data.

To delete a family account:

  1. From the Fitbit app dashboard, tap the Account icon (User-added image).
  2. Tap My Family.
  3. Remove each family member from the account. For instructions, see How do I remove someone from my Fitbit family account?
  4. After you remove all members, tap the 3 dots > Delete Family.

What happens when my child is old enough for a Fitbit standard account?

Your child must create a new Fitbit standard account. Note that your child’s previous Fitbit data won’t transfer to the new account.
