Connect with your friends and family that also have Fitbit trackers to share data and compete against one another. Competing with friends is a great way to motivate yourself. If you accept a friend request or someone accepts yours, that person appears on your friends leaderboard where you can compare step totals, send cheers and taunts, exchange messages, and compete in challenges.

Choosing your privacy settings

To decide what information you want your Fitbit friends to see, log in to your fitbit.com dashboard. Click the gear icon in the top right corner and go to Settings > Privacy. For each item, decide the visibility you prefer. The My Achievements section includes badges. Don’t forget to click or tap Save when you’re done.

Interacting with friends

The Friends tile or screen or tile shows your ranking based on a 7-day step total. Each person’s total is accurate as of the last time that person synced. Tap or click a friend to see his or her profile page, which includes step average, top badges, and friend list. Keep in mind that the information visible to you depends on that friend’s Fitbit privacy settings.

For each friend, you can click or tap their profile to cheer, taunt, or message your friend.

The Fitbit app for Windows 10 has a Notifications tab that contains  all the messages you’ve exchanged with a particular friend. Note that you'll only see the message history from the current app, which means, for example, that if you sometimes view the Fitbit app for Windows 10 on a tablet and sometimes on a desktop computer, you won't see message history from the tablet on the computer and vice versa.

For information about participating in challenges with your Fitbit friends, see Challenges FAQ.

Adding friends

You can add a maximum of 2,000 friends either from the fitbit.com dashboard or from the Fitbit app. You can choose to add friends by one of the following methods:

Friends of friends appear only if your friends do no privatize their friends list. (Not available on the fitbit.com dashboard)
  • Facebook—If you choose to connect with Facebook, see your friends who also have Fitbit accounts linked to Facebook. Invite anyone to be a Fitbit friend.  You can later revoke access to Facebook from your Fitbit account by changing your settings on your fitbit.com dashboard, or through the settings on your mobile device. If you have more than one Facebook account, you can only link one to your Fitbit account.
