Getting started with your Fitbit tracker requires connecting it to your computer or compatible mobile device. After setup, your tracker will sync its data and you can then view your stats, log food, and more. If after following the steps below you're having difficulty, see  I'm having trouble setting up my tracker.

Creating an account and setting up your new tracker

For instructions on how to set up your Fitbit tracker, choose a section below.
  • Mac or PC (Fitbit Connect)
First you'll install Fitbit Connect, which is a free software application for your computer that connects (“pairs”) your tracker to your fitbit.com dashboard. Once installed, Fitbit Connect will guide you through setting up your Fitbit account or logging into an existing one, charging your tracker (if applicable), and putting your tracker on.
If you have a  Bluetooth-enabled computer running Windows 10, get the Fitbit app for Windows 10 from the Windows Store and follow the app-setup instructions below instead of using Fitbit Connect.
You only need to complete the following steps once. After your tracker is set up, you can simply log in to http://www.fitbit.com to access your web dashboard.
    1. Go to http://www.fitbit.com/setup. Scroll down and click the pink button. It should reflect the type of computer you're using as shown below. You can change the type if necessary.

    2. Depending on your computer:
      1. If you have a PC, an .exe file will download. When the download is complete, click Run when prompted and follow the instructions. If you can't find the .exe file, search for "Fitbit Connect" in the Start menu.
      2. If you have a Mac, you'll be prompted to open or save a .dmg file. Save the file, then open it and follow the onscreen instructions. If you can't find the .dmg file, search for "Fitbit Connect" in Spotlight.
    3. Select Set Up A New Fitbit Device when you're presented with the Fitbit Connect main menu.
    4. Choose whether you're new to Fitbit or you already have a Fitbit account.
    5. You will be asked for a few details about yourself. This information improves the accuracy of your caloric burn and distance data. If you want to share your data with Fitbit friends later, you can adjust your privacy settings.
    6. When prompted, select the tracker you're setting up.
    7. Plug the wireless USB sync dongle into your computer and bring your tracker near to it to begin the connecting ("pairing") process.

    8. Follow the onscreen instructions. If you have a Flex, rapidly tap the device when instructed and then confirm that you felt the vibration. For all other trackers, a four-digit number appears when Fitbit Connect identifies the tracker. Enter this number on the screen when prompted.
    9. Click Next and your tracker will connect to your Fitbit.com account. This can take up to a minute.
    10. Once your tracker has connected to fitbit.com, you may be prompted to enter a greeting (depending on which tracker you have). This can be your name or any 8-character combination of letters or numbers.
When your tracker is linked with your Fitbit account, you'll see a notification and some basic instructions on using your tracker. You're ready to start moving!

  • Fitbit apps for iOS, Android, and Windows
Follow these instructions if you have an iOS, Android, or Windows device running Windows 8.1+ or Windows 10. Note that it's not possible to set up a Fitbit Surge using the Fitbit apps for Windows. For more information, see Can I use my Fitbit Surge with the Fitbit app for Windows?
    1. Verify that the software on your mobile device is updated to the latest version:
      • iOS—tap Settings > GeneralSoftware Update.
      • Android—tap Settings > About Phone or About Device > Android Version.
      • Windows 8.1—tap Settings > system > phone update
      • Windows 10—tap or click Start > Settings > Update & security.
    2. Verify that Bluetooth is enabled on your device:
      • iOS—tap Settings > Bluetooth.
      • Android—tap Settings > Connections > Bluetooth.
      • Windows 8.1—tap Settings > system > Bluetooth.
      • Windows 10—tap Settings > Devices > Bluetooth.
    3. In the Apple Apple Store, Google Play Store, or Windows Store, find and install the Fitbit app.
    4. Open the app and click or tap Join Fitbit.
    5. Choose your tracker and confirm you want to set it up.
    6. Follow the onscreen instructions to enter your personal details and account information. This information is used to set up your Fitbit account and calculate your basal metabolic rate (BMR), which helps determine your calorie count for activities.
    7. After agreeing to the Terms of Service and Privacy Policy, follow the onscreen instructions to set up and connect ("pair") your tracker.

If you're setting up with a Windows 10 tablet or computer and it doesn’t have Bluetooth, you’ll be prompted to plug in the wireless sync dongle that came with your tracker. Even if you have Bluetooth, a prompt to insert the dongle may occasionally appear if the Bluetooth signal is weak or problematic. We recommend keeping the dongle handy even if you usually sync using Bluetooth.

If you're using an Android device, make sure Bluetooth is enabled in the Fitbit app. To do so, tap the menu button in the top left corner, tap Devices, and check the Bluetooth setting.

    8. When you see your app dashboard, setup is complete and you’re ready to start moving. Every time you open the app, it will sync with your tracker and you'll see all your latest stats on the dashboard.
    9. If you're having trouble, see I'm having trouble setting up my tracker.

If your tracker won’t pair, your Bluetooth signal may be weak or compromised and you can try setting up with a computer or another mobile device.
