What’s a Fitbit account and what’s a Google Account?

Before we launched Google accounts on Fitbit, you created a Fitbit account by providing us with information such as your name, email address, and a password. You then used your Fitbit account to log in to the Fitbit app and connect your device to sync data to your account.

A Google Account gives you access to Google services, including Gmail, Drive, Maps, YouTube, and more. You can log in to all Google services with the same account. If you use Gmail or log in to another Google service, you already have a Google Account. For more information, see the Google Accounts webpage.

I use my Gmail address to log in to Fitbit now. Do I already have a Google Account on Fitbit?
Not necessarily. If you created a Fitbit account with your Gmail address, you must still move Fitbit to your Google Account. When you log in to the Fitbit app, a notification appears to prompt you to move Fitbit to the Google Account that you use with other Google services like Gmail. Tap the notification, and follow the on-screen instructions to move Fitbit to your Google Account. If you're not ready to move, you can continue to use your Fitbit account for as long as it's supported.
What will happen to my Fitbit data if I move Fitbit to my Google Account?

Google will continue to protect Fitbit customers’ privacy and has made a series of binding commitments with global regulators which include the confirmation that Fitbit users’ health and wellness data won’t be used for Google Ads. This data will be kept separate from Google Ads data.

In addition, during the migration flow before you complete the move, you'll have the opportunity to review and make changes to your Fitbit data and setup. After you complete the move, you’ll continue to manage your Fitbit data from your Google Account settings and the Fitbit app. You'll keep all historical data that you choose to move to your Google Account.

Is Fitbit sharing my data with Google before I move my account?
Fitbit isn’t sharing your data with Google before you move to a Google Account unless you authorized Fitbit to share certain data with Google, like if you use Fitbit with a Google service. For example, you may authorize Google Assistant to provide your Fitbit activity, like your step count and calories burned. For more information on connecting Fitbit and Google Assistant, see How do I use a voice assistant on my Fitbit smartwatch? and the related Google help article. For more information on how Fitbit shares data with others, including Google, see the Fitbit Privacy Policy section titled "How Information Is Shared."
Will I be required to have a Google Account to use Fitbit devices and services?

Some uses of Fitbit will require a Google Account, including to sign up for Fitbit or activate newly released Fitbit and Pixel devices.

If you have a Fitbit account, you can move Fitbit to your Google Account or continue to use your existing Fitbit devices and services with your Fitbit account for as long as it's supported. Support of Fitbit accounts will continue until at least 2025. After support of Fitbit accounts ends, a Google Account will be required to use Fitbit. We'll be transparent with you about the timeline for ending Fitbit accounts through notices within the Fitbit app, by email, and in help articles.

Note: If you're a member of a Fitbit Care program, your provider will let you know when you can move Fitbit to your Google Account.

What if I don’t want to move Fitbit to a Google Account?
If you’re already a Fitbit customer, you can continue to use your existing Fitbit account with your existing Fitbit devices and services for as long as Fitbit accounts are supported. This will be until at least 2025. After support of Fitbit accounts ends, a Google account will be required to use Fitbit.

Your children need to upgrade their Fitbit accounts

  1. For each child over the age of 13 (or the applicable age in your country), open their Fitbit profile in kid view and have them upgrade their account. For instructions, see How do I manage my child in the Fitbit app?
  2. After the account upgrade, your child will have a standard Fitbit account and can move to a Google Account on their own.
  3. If you still see your child's Today tab in the Fitbit app, log out and sign in with your Fitbit login.
  4. Try again to move yourself and the younger members of your family to Google accounts.
  5. To stay connected, you can create a closed group in the Fitbit app. For more information, see What should I know about groups in the Fitbit Community?
