Which strokes can I use to swim with my Fitbit device?
Swim using any of the 4 most common strokes (freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke, and butterfly). For best results, we recommend swimming freestyle.
Do I have to be a good swimmer to track my swims with my Fitbit device?
Your Fitbit device records your swims even if you’re a novice swimmer, meaning you can swim about 6 to 12 lengths of the pool without stopping to rest. If you’re unable to swim this distance, you may notice inconsistencies in your swim data including some lengths not counted. As your swimming ability improves, you’ll likely notice fewer inconsistencies in your data.
Why do I see a length count after an open water swim with my Fitbit device?
Your Fitbit device tries to identify lengths each time you swim, so you may still see an estimated number of lengths after your open water swim.
Why does my Fitbit swim data seem wrong?

Inconsistencies in your swim data may be caused by any of the following:

  • You completed only a few laps
  • You stopped to rest multiple times or in the middle of the pool
  • You stopped to rest for longer than 60 seconds after completing a pool length
  • You changed your stroke type midway through a length
  • You swam with a kickboard or without using your arms
  • You swam less than the minimum duration needed for your swim to be automatically recognized
Can I swim in deep water with my Fitbit device?
Most Fitbit devices are water-resistant up to 50 meters. For more information, see Can I swim or shower with my Fitbit device?
Does swimming with my Fitbit device count toward my step goal?
A swim exercise counts toward your active minutes and calories burned goals. You don’t earn steps for swimming.
